BAC definition of sustainability: The ability to provide for the needs of the world's current population without damaging the ability of future generations to provide for themselves.

Sustainable building and remodeling is often referred to as "Green Construction". BAC considers sustainability more comprehensive than green, yet we frequently use the "green" since it is a simple word that quickly conveys sustsainability. The "green" approach impacts the environment less, improves indoor air quality, costs less over the long term, looks great, is highly functional and enriches home-life experiences.

Benefits of Going Green:

  1. Energy costs reduced and protection from the impact of energy price increases year after year.
  2. Increased resale value. Home value increases $20 for each $1 reduction in annual utility bills; per Gina Vermilyea of Coldwell Banker Burnet based on information she took from "The Appraisal Journal".
  3. Healthier indoor air quality through minimizing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's), protection from lead paint and asbestos dust, moisture and mold reduction and radon detection/abatement.
  4. Reduced costs and time for maintenance.
  5. Natural world is more directly connected to inside of the home by increasing use of natural lighting which can reduce electricity use and possibly improve occupant moods.
  6. Green House Gas emissions reduced.
  7. Better protection of habitats, natural resources and the rights of cultures where many building products are obtained.
  8. Reduction in use of scarce resources (oil, timber, etc...) that leave us politically/financially exposed to less stable global suppliers.
  9. Increased happiness with aesthetics of the home. Options for looks that are one-of-a-kind...less the look of manufactured consistency and more like nature itself where each plant or animal is at least slightly different than another.
